Civilization Through the Ages: An Evening of Heritage and the Wisdom of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai

Categories :

Yesterday evening at the Consulate General of Pakistan in Chicago, I had the privilege of attending “Civilization Through the Ages: From Moen-Jo-Daro to Bhitai’s Message and Legacy” — a beautiful program tracing the arc of one of the world’s oldest civilizations to the timeless poetry of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai.

The evening featured the documentary screening of GANJ: Treasures of Shah Jo Risalo, along with talks by Prof. J. Mark Kenoyer — one of the world’s leading scholars of the Indus Valley Civilization — and distinguished author and speaker Dr. Maqbool Halenota. Hearing about Mohenjo-daro, a planned city with covered drainage and the Great Bath built over 4,500 years ago, is a powerful reminder that the roots of urban life run deep in our part of the world.

The Wisdom of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai

Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai (1689–1752), the beloved Sufi poet of Sindh, left behind a treasure that has guided hearts for nearly three centuries: the Shah Jo Risalo — his “message” in verse.

Bhitai’s wisdom was simple and profound. Through the folk heroines of Sindh — Sassui wandering the desert in search of her beloved Punhun, Marui refusing a king’s comforts for her humble desert home, Sohni braving the river each night — he taught that the soul’s journey toward the Divine is one of longing, courage, and sacrifice. These were never just love stories; they were maps of the spiritual path.

His message, at its heart:

  • Love above all — love of the Divine, love of humanity, a love that dissolves every boundary.
  • Tolerance — he honored every sincere path to truth and spoke against narrowness of all kinds.
  • The dignity of the common person — his heroines were village women, his language the people’s Sindhi, his shrine open to everyone.
  • Oneness — that all of creation reflects the One, and separation is the only illusion.
Five thousand years from Mohenjo-daro to Bhitai, and the same lessons.

Evenings like this matter. They remind us who we are and where we come from — and in a city as diverse as Chicago, sharing that heritage with friends old and new is a gift. Grateful to the Consulate General of Pakistan for hosting, and to Rashida Dahodwala and friends for the wonderful company.

Nearly three hundred years later, Bhitai’s verses are still sung at his shrine in Bhit Shah and in homes around the world — because wisdom like his doesn’t age. It simply waits for each of us to be ready to hear it.
